nonken _ news Music for Piano and Electronics February 21, 2008, Marilyn Nonken will perform a recital of works for piano and electronics, with guest artist Kathleen Supove. The program will feature the world premieres by Christopher Bailey and Thomas Beyer, as well as music of Jonathan Harvey, Alvin Lucier, and Beth Wiemann. Gary Higginson of MusicWeb UK writes: "You can rest assured that in Marilyn Nonken we are hearing a musician of outstanding qualities. It is evident that she knows, strongly characterises and loves this music. The concert will be held at the Frederick Loewe Theater, 35 West 4th St, and is free and open to the public. 10 FOR CARTER, IN NEW YORK AND PHILADELPHIA In honor of Elliott Carter's 100th birthday, the innovative Network For New Music has commissioned ten works for piano from ten composers, celebrating his century of creativity. In concerts in New York and Philadelphia, Marilyn Nonken and Stephen Gosling will premiere these new compositions, by Jeffery Cotton, Alvin Curran, Jeremy Gill, Jennifer Higdon, Jeffrey Mumford, Augusta Read Thomas, Uri Caine, Milton Babbitt, Maurice Wright, and Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. An added attraction will be a performance of Carter's "Triple Duo," performed by the virtuoso members of the Network for New Music Ensemble.www.networkfornewmusic.org David Rakowski composes Piano Concerto for Marilyn Nonken November 2, 2007 Marilyn Nonken will premiere David Rakowski's new Piano Concerto with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, under the director of Gil Rose. Rakowski’s concerto, a much-anticipated work written for Ms. Nonken, features the soloist not only on piano, but also toy piano. Of Nonken's performance of Rakowski's piano etudes, Richard Buell of the Boston Globe writes, "[this is] music that demands the agile, speedy fingerwork that has become her calling card." Nonken to perform at Festival Aspects des Musique d’Aujourd-Hui In March 2008, Marilyn Nonken will be featured on this Caën new music festival, performing Tristan Murail’s “Les Travaux et les Jours” and the final volume of Olivier Messiaen’s “Catalogue d’Oiseaux.” Andy Hamilton of THE WIRE described Marilyn’s playing of Murail as “ luminous, showing delicacy, drama and passion….seeming to capture every nuance of this beautiful music… an ideal introduction to the work of one of the finest contemporary composers.”
In September 2006, Marilyn Nonken assumed the Directorship of Piano Studies, New York University Steinhardt Music and Performing Arts Professions. This prestigious appointment will allow her to shape the curriculum in innovative ways. She looks forward to establishing a home for serious study of 20th- and 21st-century music performance practice, and expanding the already adventurous activities of the department. |
