"Vivid,
energetic performances"
On 20 November 2008, Miller Theatre in New York City will present Ensemble 21 performing the premiere of Jason Eckardt's Undersong
cycle. Comprised of four interconnected chamber works, each
successively growing in length and instrumentation, Undersong forms a
single, large supercomposition. Featured solosits are soprano Tony
Arnold, flutist David Fedele, and 'cellist Christopher Finckel; James
Baker will conduct. The final composition fo the cycle, The Distance
(This) for soprano and ten instrumentalists, was commissioned by Miller
Theatre and will receive its world premiere.
Mode recently released a recording of Jason Eckardt's chamber music, including After Serra, Tangled Loops, A Glimpse Retraced, and Polarities. Featured performers include Marilyn Nonken and saxophonist Taimur Sullivan conducted by Paul Hostetter and Jeffrey Milarsky. Praised by The New York Times as "celebrat[ing] harmonic prickliness, rhythmic complexity and a density of ideas," the music on this much-anticipated disc is Ensemble 21's second recording, the first being David Rakowski's "Sesso e Violenza" for New World Records (formerly CRI 820).
