Ensemble 21, the contemporary classical music performance group, was founded in 1993 by composer Jason Eckardt and pianist Marilyn Nonken. Since then, the critically acclaimed Ensemble has earned a reputation for top-caliber performances, presented nearly thirty premieres, and commissioned over fifteen new works. Recognized for its top-caliber performances, Ensemble 21 has also earned a reputation as a champion of innovative European composers rarely heard in America, specifically those associated with the New Complexity and Spectral movements. In 1999, Ensemble 21 was the first ensemble in the United States to collaborate with IRCAM. In more recent years, Ensemble 21 has presented portrait concerts of stylistically diverse composers including Milton Babbitt, Jean Barraque, James Dillon, Morton Feldman, Brian Ferneyhough, Jonathan Harvey, Salvatore Martirano, David Rakowski, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Charles Wuorinen.
